The Hokum Hotshots are a blues/roots duo from South Shields, Tyne and Wear, UK. Consisting of Pete Mason (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Jim Murray (vocals, guitar), the duo, formed in 1969, are legends on the local folk scene and recorded two CDs in the late 1990s, Still in the Game and Guitar Swing. The Hotshots recorded Maybe it's the Blues in 1985 which was released on vinyl. The Hotshots, as well as playing their own arrangements, have reworked old delta blues standards by Lightnin' Hopkins and Big Bill Broonzy, among many others.

Syl Johnson (b. July 1, 1936) is an American blues and soul singer and music producer. Born Sylvester Thompson in Holly Springs, Mississippi, Johnson sang and played with blues artists Magic Sam, Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells and Howlin' Wolf in the 1950s, before recording with Jimmy Reed for Vee-Jay in 1959. He made his solo debut that same year with Federal, a subsidiary of King Records of Cincinnati, backed by Freddie King on guitar.

This is a band that has set out to continue the legacy of the big names of rock'n'roll - Johnny Cash, the Cramps, Elvis, Bo Diddley, Hasil Adkins - setting to music stories of damned souls. Huddie Ledbetter (23 January 1888-6 December 1949) was a leading American blues singer and guitarist. His songbook contained a large number of standard folk tunes, most adapted from previous sources. Though many of his posthumous releases list him as "Leadbelly," he himself spelled it "Lead Belly." This is also the usage on most of his original records, tombstone, as well as of the Lead Belly Foundation.
Musselwhite was born in the rural hill country of Mississippi. He has said that he is of Choctaw descent, and he was born in a region originally inhabited by the Choctaw. However, in a 2005 interview, he said his mother had told him he was actually Cherokee. His family considered it normal to play music, with his father playing guitar and harmonica, his mother playing piano, and a relative who was a one-man band.
