Born in Valhalla, NY, Shaw's first musical influences were her uncle and grandmother, who loved to sing and play gospel music on the family’s "hi-fi" record player. As a girl, Marlena was also involved with numerous gospel singing groups.

Leona Lewis (born April, 3rd 1985) is an English singer-songwriter and winner of the third series of popular U.K. television talent show The X Factor. Lewis was born in the London district of Islington, and is of English, Welsh and Guyanese descent. At the age of five, she attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School. She began writing her own songs at the age of 12, and had recorded an album of demo songs by the age of 15.
