Skillet formed in 1996 with two members: John Cooper, former vocalist for Tennessee progressive rock band Seraph, and Ken Steorts, former guitarist for Urgent Cry. The two bands met through touring together, but those bands disbanded soon after, so John and Ken's pastor encouraged them to form their own band as a side-project.
DYS
There is one band called DYS and one band called Dys. Last.Fm mixes them up: 1.) Formed at ground zero of Boston's legendary straight edge hardcore scene, DYS, stood for "Department of Youth Services" but they jokingly told everyone it stood for "Dave You Suck".
They rose out of SS Decontrol's Boston Crew, going on to help establish the city as a center of the movement along with Negative FX and Last Rights.
