New Zealand

Jakob

Jakob is a New Zealand band, based in Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The band consists of guitarist Jeff Boyle; bassist Maurice Beckett; and drummer Jason Johnston. They have been compared to such bands as Mogwai, Sonic Youth, and High Dependency Unit, though they largely eschew any vocals or samples in their songs. The band formed in July 1998, and began by opening for New Zealand bands Salmonella Dub and Pitch Black at the local pub O'Flaherty's.

bond street bridge

Bond Street Bridge is the creation of Auckland-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Sam Prebble. Sam has been playing music for as long as he can remember, and ‘probably before that as well,’ as he puts it. Bond Street Bridge is currently a solo project, but Sam has always played in bands, orchestras and choirs. For the past few years he has been playing in the Broken Heartbreakers and Reb Fountain’s Bandits, and has recently guested on releases by White Swan Black Swan, Dylan Storey and Andy Gibson, playing fiddle and writing string arrangements.

Sleepy Age

This Christchurch band cites such bands as The Pixies, Radiohead and Mystery Jets as influences and think they sound like Miley Cyrus (or so they say on their MySpace - go figure?). But seriously, these guys have sweet yet melodramatic lyrics, soothed by catchy beats. The band features Josh Burgess (of Bang Bang Eche fame) on vocals/keys/guitar, Josh Black (of Neil Robinson) on bass and Julian Vares on drums. Check out their new single Décor: http://www.goldsounds.co.nz/ Their self titled EP is available on bandcamp: http://sleepyage.bandcamp.com.

H2

With so many artists within the house/tech scene, it’s never easy to find one that stands out from the crowd. That is unless you have listened to the speaker bursting productions from one of the UK’s finest new production / dj teams – H2. Collaborating in 2004 and producing since 2005, Manchester based Tez Hurst and Danny Hevingham have come a long way in a short space of time, and if the last 18 months are anything to go by, these two young artists are just warming up. Their first official release ‘Somethin Sik’ was signed to Jason Herd’s JFunk Recordings, and was nothing short of massive.

Artist Type:

Chug

A band who have featured many of Dunedin's musical alumni in the line-up over the past three years, Chug's membership includes Norma O'Malley on organ and vocals (she was in Look Blue Go Purple) Alf Danielson on bass (of Goblin Mix and Stephen), Sean Broadley on drums (he's a scientist) and 3Ds guitar-dementist Dave Mitchell on six string stretching. Their sound is a mix of forceful rhythms and sweet Dunedin pop that blend into smart and chunky songs.

The Stones

The Stones - named cheekily after The Rolling Stones - were a band from Dunedin in New Zealand. One of the earliest bands to record on the Flying Nun label, they helped form the style of music known as the Dunedin Sound. The Stones split up not long after its release, although all members of the band went on to success in other local bands. Most important of these was Wayne Elsey's time in The DoubleHappys, a band which itself led to the formation of Straitjacket Fits.
