Shelagh Mcdonald

Originally from Scotland, Shelagh McDonald moved to London in the late 1960s, where she was part of the folk-music scene. In 1970 she released her first album, Shelagh McDonald Album, which sold rather poorly. 1971's Stargazer sold better, and was critically acclaimed. However, some time after its release, McDonald disappeared and wasn't heard from again until quite recently. Shelagh McDonald's music is close to that of some of her contemporaries, for example, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, and Duncan Browne.

Guapo

ANCIENT HISTORY: Three years have passed since “Black Oni” (Ipecac Records). Four years since “Five Suns”(Cuneiform Records). The new album by Guapo is finally here and thus concludes the recondite triptych they set out to accomplish. Flux is not uncommon here, every record taking on new musical hues and offering disparate ideas and perspectives. However an upheaval in the line-up, which of recent years has been anchored by the trio of Daniel O’Sullivan, Matthew Thompson and David Smith, triggered a change in course when Thompson left the band just prior to the release of Black Oni in 2005.

Bwana

Bwana are an obscure psychedelic-funk-jazz-rock band from Nicaragua circa 1970-1972. Lots of Latin percussion, acid rock guitar, jammin' organ. Spanish language vocals for the most part, although actually the majority of this consists of instrumental grooves. Bwana must have been a hot live band. There's certainly many flashes of acid-psych intensity but this really will appeal more surely to the Dusty Grooves/lounge crowd than those only hoping for the real freaked-out stuff. More Santana than Mutantes, in other words, and strongly psychedelicized.

Neon Indian

An elusive new project from composer Alan Palomo from Vega. Forged after a hazy winter gathering in Texas, this initial batch of tracks were the result of field recordings, record samples, a collection of bizarre synth sounds. Soliciting the visual acrobatics of video artist Alicia Scardetta, this project is setting out to be a multimedia maelstrom. Psychic Chasms is set to be released on October 13th, 2009 on Lefse Records

2econd Class Citizen

2econd Class Citizen’s emergence on the scene has created a buzz of anticipation from a diverse collection of music circles. The young man from London, England (originally from Somerset and raised in Huddersfield) makes music that he simply calls "Wyred Folk": a hybrid of electronically produced folk combined with instrumental Hip Hop. Swinging between melancholy and pure anger, strong guitar riffs mined from old psych rock records and the weeping voices lifted from old folk music, he seems to find his real home in a crate of old and dusty vinyl.
