If there is a face to the independent soul music movement, it is probably Eric Roberson. The respect he receives from other artists has been driven by his uncompromising success as well as from the unselfishness he has shown in support of other up-and-coming singers and musicians. That peer love appears to only be exceeded by the near fanatical following he has among a surprisingly large fanbase, making him a sort of indie soul royalty.
Lalah Hathaway is a contemporary R&B/Jazz singer and the daughter of soul legend Donny Hathaway. After studying at Berklee, Hathaway signed with Virgin Records and released her self titled debut, Lalah Hathaway, in 1990. The set spawned 4 R&B Hits, including the Top 5 smash Heaven Knows. Her 1994 follow up, A Moment, did less well, and Hathaway parted ways with Virgin. She went on to work with many other established artists, including Take 6, Mary J. Blige and Marcus Miller, writing, producing and doing background vocals.

Karriem started out as jazz drummer, working with vocalist Beety Carter and trumpeter Roy Hargrove. He is also a producer, and has worked with people like The Roots, Common, Slum Village and J Dilla. He is also part of The Detroit Experiment, along with the likes of Amp Fiddler and Marcus Belgrave.
Born in the underrated Soul Music town of Cleveland, Ohio, Conya Doss was admittedly "raised on Stevie Wonder, Angela Winbush, Donny Hathaway and Minnie Ripperton." She attended the prestigious Cleveland School of the Performing Arts and sang with childhood friend Stacy Richardson (now a backup singer for Anthony Hamilton) in the duo Lyrik. As an adult she wrote for 3LW and worked with Gerald Levert and PAJAM before venturing into a career as a solo singer.
