They were formed in 1973 and are still releasing records today. Their lineup has changed over the years, as has their musical style, although it has not strayed too far from the "roots reggae" style that they are generally categorized as.

Ken Boothe's (born 1948 in Kingston, Jamaica) is known as "Mr Rocksteady" for his prominence during the musical period 1966-1974 and was a major idol for the to-be members of UB40. Boothe started by recording a version of Sandie Shaw's "Puppet on a String" in 1967. Later the same year, Boothe and Alton Ellis had a successful U.K. tour with the group The Soul Vendors. Under new direction from record producer Lloyd Chalmers, the song "Everything I Own" surprisingly was Number One in the UK in 1974.

The Congos is the reggae vocal trio Ashanti Roy, Cedric "Congo" Myton (both born in 1947) and Watty Burnett. They recorded the classic Heart of the Congos in 1977, produced by Lee Perry at the Black Ark Studio. Cedric Myton had previously worked with Prince Lincoln Thompson.
Born in 1951, Montego Bay, Jamaica, Winston "Niney" Holness, or "Niney the Observer," was one of the premiere Jamaican producers of the 1970s. Under the tutelage of producer Bunny Lee, and later Lee "Scratch" Perry, Niney crafted what would become his signature "Observer" sound. His studio band, The Observers, furnished a raw, yet robust sound that often featured plucky guitar riffs. He shaped the reggae soundscape of the 70s working with artists like Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Dillinger, Leroy Smart, Max Romeo, the Heptones, the Mighty Diamonds, and Tommy McCook (to name a few).
Old Man Luedecke (Chris Luedecke) is a singer and banjo player living near Halifax, Nova Scotia. Old Man Luedecke left the big old city of Toronto, met a girl in the Yukon, fell in love, bought a banjo and fell in love again. After a couple of years of love and banjo and the makings of a brilliant performing career in sunny Halifax, he returned to the Yukon with his sweethearts. There he woodshedded. He wrote a ton of songs over the next year and a half.
