Etran Finatawa

Etran Finatawa was formed as a band at the time of the 2004 Festival in the Desert near Timbuctou. The literal meaning of their name is ‘the stars of tradition’. They are the first group to use the songs and music of the Wodaabe in a modern context. They began as a group of ten musicians who wanted to unite these two nomadic cultures as a symbol of peace and reconciliaton. The touring and recording band consists of six players three of whom are Tuareg and three, Wodaabe-Fulani.

Cheick-Tidiane Seck, keyboardist, composer, and performer of popular and traditional Malian music. He has been playing with Mory Kante and Salif Keita, as well as with the jazz pianist Hank Jones.

Amadou & Mariam

Amadou and Mariam are a musical duo from Mali, composed of the couple Mariam Doumbia (vocals) (born in Mali's capital Bamako 15 April 1958) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals) (born in Bamako 24 October 1954). The pair, known as "the blind couple from Mali" met at Mali's Institute for the Young Blind, and found they shared an interest in music. The duo produces music that mixes traditional Mali sound with rock guitars, Syrian violins, Cuban trumpets, Egyptian ney, Colombian trombones, Indian tablas and Dogon percussion.

Sibongile Khumalo

This South African Songstress was featured in the South African Music Documentary "Amandla!" Sibonghile Khumalo is one of the leading ladies in the South African tradition of heavenly voices. She has an excellent album out called "Live at the Market theatre" which is a tribute to South African musicians including;Miriam Makeba, Prince Lengoasa, Bheki Mseleku, Caiphus Semenya, Dorothy Masuka amongst others. She is trained as an opera singer and brought that vibe to these recordings. On one of the tracks on the album she switched from vocals to violin the result sounded celtic.

Wisdom

There are at least 3 artists called Wisdom, a Hungarian power metal band and an African funk band,and The Other IsParaguay Black Metal 1. Wisdom is a Hungarian power metal band formed in 2001. After their first demo in 2002 they had the opportunity to perform at Summer Rocks festival among metal artists like U.D.O., Saxon, Doro and Dionysus. They released their debut EP entitled Wisdom in 2004. In 2006 Wisdom performed as an opening act for Helloween in Budapest. Their first full-length album (Words of Wisdom) was released by Hammer Records in late 2006.

Griselda Sanderson is a folk musician and lecturer at Dartington College of Arts, Devon, UK.
