Sheffield Bands

Navvy

Navvy are a 4 piece group from Sheffield. Keith plays bass and sings; Claire sings and plays percussion and keyboards; Marie plays the drums and Daf plays the guitar. The band formed in 2006 from the ashes of several underground Sheffield bands, and their first session with Pulp's erstwhile producer Alan Smyth resulted their debut E.P. called "4 Songs By Navvy". Navvy's sound is sometimes angular and ferocious and sometimes poppy. Their songs are usually concerned with longevity and dysfunction.

The Bon Bon Club

The Bon Bon Club first started about 2 years ago, when The Long Blondes rhythm section decided to break away and have a go on their own. They gave themselves the names Sushi Quatro and Thirsty Moore, and covered songs they liked, playing only bass and drums. In 2007 they recorded 3 songs with Alan Smyth, and a new band member Chapatti Smith came on board, providing extra vox and percussion. These 3 songs were later released by Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation. The Bon Bon Club became a 2 piece once more, when Thirsty Moore retired, and Chapatti Smith took over on the drums.

Mothership

Three bands share the name Mothership: one in the UK , one in the US. and a new one in Portugal. For the early 90’s metallic hardcore crossover Erie band, see Mother Ship.

(1) Mothership (UK)
The Mothership began its tempestuous journey at low tide on the murky back waters of The Steel City. Cultivating a penchant for the dark, dirty and electronic, as well as a nefarious sense of rhythm and funky guitar-based melodies, the band forge together to produce a melting hot cauldron of sound as diverse as it is audibly pleasing. And they're partial to a nice cup of tea as well!

The LayLanas

Lana McDee and Sandra Lea -MOTHER and DAUGHTER outfit- started writing songs in their kitchen while ’muma’ made chicken soup and steamed up the windows and Lana couldn’t breathe and had to sing instead. They strummed their way to Brighton with a beautiful NAMELESS guitar (thats a bit battered now, but they love it none the less.)
Here they picked up the etherial violinist that is Martha Rose (aka: fiddly dee) with her country-twang-a-lang and painted nails.
