Kim Richey

It's difficult to find a specific category fitting for Ohio-born singer/songwriter Kim Richey. With each album, she seems to defy any kind of definite classification. Though she has composed hits for country superstars like Trisha Yearwood ("Believe Me Baby (I Lied)"), she is a gifted vocalist in her own right. Each of her overlooked albums has received some level of critical acclaim, perhaps her fourth, 2002's Rise, for its risky instrumentation, vocals, and lyrics, has enjoyed the most praise from critics.

Charlie Musselwhite

Musselwhite was born in the rural hill country of Mississippi. He has said that he is of Choctaw descent, and he was born in a region originally inhabited by the Choctaw. However, in a 2005 interview, he said his mother had told him he was actually Cherokee. His family considered it normal to play music, with his father playing guitar and harmonica, his mother playing piano, and a relative who was a one-man band. At the age of three, Musselwhite moved to Memphis, Tennessee.

Hera

Icelandic singer/songwriter Hera has been living in New Zealand for about 10 years whilst cultivating and carving out a very successful career in her native land on the opposite side of the world. Not an easy task but one that was deservedly rewarded in 2002 when HERA was named Best Female Singer at that year’s Icelandic Music Awards, a major achievement for the young artist given that for the previous 10 years that category had been almost completely dominated by Bjork.

Artist Type:

Hackensaw Boys

The Hackensaw Boys first began playing their joyful blend of old-time and bluegrass-tinged string-band music on the streets of Charlottesville in the autumn of 1999. Far from limiting themselves to the old-time canon, however, the Hackensaws have been first and foremost a band of songwriters. Their music, while drawing upon the spirit of the mountains, is sophisticated and informed by the best elements of punk rock and classic country music. As one reviewer put it:

Johnny Cash & June Carter

Quite possibly, the most recognizable voice in all of country music belongs to "The Man in Black," Johnny Cash. His forays into the fields of country, folk, rock and even gospel music, distinguish Cash as one of the most intriguing performers in all of 20th century popular music. In addition to one of the most impressive musical careers of all time, he enjoyed success and garnered tremendous respect as an author, actor and Biblical scholar.

Artist Type:

Lydia Loveless

Blessed with a commanding, blast-it-to-the-back-of-the room voice, the 21-year-old Lydia Loveless was raised on a family farm in Coshocton, Ohio, US—a small weird town with nothing to do but make music. With a dad who owned a country music bar, Loveless often woke up with a house full of touring musicians scattered on couches and floors. When she got older, in the time-honored traditions of teenage rebellion, she turned her back on these roots, moved to the city (Columbus, OH) and immersed herself in the punk scene...
