(Paul Lowman, The Talk Magazine) Exploding out of the soulless back streets of York, The Federals bring a vitality, urgency and immediacy to the music scene. Fast and furious, these four angry youths are putting the rage into garage with an arsenal of spiky potential rock n' roll classics. Owen Gray

Considering the astonishing quality of a lot of this man's work over the years, it is somewhat disastrous that Owen Gray isn't more highly regarded than he is, being in the shadows of his younger peers such as John Holt and Bob Andy just to mention a few. Whatever the reason is cause for speculations, perhaps his choice of material and direction hasn't always felt sincere, but on the other hand Owen has always delivered the goods in whatever style he recorded, possessing one of Jamaica's greatest voices if you didn't know.

Jamaican singer Joe White has had an unsung career, issuing several brilliant singles through the ska, rocksteady, and early reggae eras, including 1967's "Rudies All Around," 1968's "Every Night" (produced by Sonia Pottinger), and an amazing version of "My Guiding Star," produced by Charles Ross at Studio One. Somehow, though, White never garnered the mass attention he deserved. Early on he was a member of vocal group the Leaders with Ken Boothe, Roy Shirley, and Chuck Josephs, and several singles by the quartet were issued on Federal, but none generated much action.
