Cat's Eyes
Faris Badwan, frontman for UK indie rockers The Horrors, has a new project: Cat's Eyes, a duo with the Canadian opera soprano and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Zeffira. The group specializes in a glassy, symphonic take on girl-group pop, and they played their first show in December in a pretty unusual place: St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, during an afternoon mass "attended by seven high-ranking cardinals," according to a press release. Bonding first over dark British pop from the early '80s like The Smiths and Joy Division, and stranger more modern fare like Micachu, Nordwind and Smith were natural collaborators.

Heligoland
There are two acts called Heligoland: 1) Formed in 1999, Heligoland are a five-piece band originally from Melbourne, Australia now living in Paris, France that plays sparse, dreamy and evocative music. Heligoland's songs and sound have been compared to the atmospheric textures and soaring female vocals of the Cocteau Twins, the spartan soulfulness of Low and the wistful melancholy of Mojave 3. Heligoland have recently finished recording a new album in Paris and Rennes which was produced and mixed by Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins / Violet Indiana).
Maps & Atlases
Chicago’s progressive songsmiths Maps & Atlases released their long awaited album, Perch Patchwork, on June 29, 2010. The record was produced by Jason Cupp (The Elected, Nurses, Cast Spells). The band’s unique style melds the technicality of progressive music and the idiosyncrasies of art rock into a fascinating and oddly accessible sound all their own. Known for their virtuosic musical ability, Maps & Atlases write pop songs with a magnificent aptitude for texture and a distinctive blend of both the intricate and organic.
