Churches

CHURCHES can refer to two bands. 1) An American rock band made up of Caleb Nichols (grand lake), Pat Spurgeon (rogue wave, DTour Movie) and Dominic East (rogue wave, our lady of the highway). When EMA asks the question 'what's it like to be small-town and gay?' in her unhinged-angst anthem 'California', Caleb Nichols has an answer: It was brutal, it was beautiful, and well worth singing about.

Drowners

Hometown: New York. Band lineup: Matt Hitt (vocals, guitar), Jack Ridley (guitar), Erik Snyder (bass), and David Rubin (drums). We can't tell yet if Drowners are a typical New York band or a typical London one. They're said by some to be part of the ongoing Britpop renaissance (Blur and Pulp reforming, new bands like Blackeye forming), but really they have more in common with the early-noughties CBGBs revival.
