small crew

Small Crew is Richard Adderley and Dan Edwards (formerly of bands like The Boyfriends, The Lucas Group and Vermont), although neither is necessarily on any given Small Crew Recording. Small Crew is whoever is in the room at the time when Small Crew music is being made. Small Crew can also be at the end of a phone line, in the post or on a computer, radio or television. If you aid, facilitate or enjoy Small Crew activities, you are Small Crew. Activity is currently limited to this planet but this is purely for technical reasons.

My Friend The Chocolate Cake

Formed 1989 by David Bridie and Helen Mountfort (members of Not Drowning Waving) Like their former band, My Friend The Chocolate Cake's music can be seen to straddle the worlds of ambient and world music, with an emphasis on piano and violin-led acoustic music. Influences range from the obvious (such as Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Celtic folk music), to the less obvious (such as John Cale and Talk Talk).

Liam Singer

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Liam Singer studied piano as a child, and at 14 began recording songs on the accordion, synthesizer and theremin. In the early 2000s, Singer studied music composition at Kenyon College in Ohio, with harpsichord as his primary instrument. During his time at Kenyon he played in several bands and co-founded a 20-piece kazoo orchestra. Returning to Portland after college, Singer recorded his first album, The Empty Heart of the Chameleon, and played keyboards for The Scientifics (now Eliot Rose) and Nate Ashley.

My Life Story

My Life Story were a 1990s pop group regarded as part of the britpop movement. Fronted by singer/songwriter Jake Shillingford, the group was formed in London c.1991 and inherited the name from an earlier group in which Shillingford had appeared. A cross between a pop group and a chamber orchestra, the band's sound was heavily oriented toward orchestral instruments. At the time of their debut single, Girl A, Girl B, Boy C (1994), the group had a regular line-up of twelve members.

The Society Islands

The Society Islands is the musical project of Cologne, Germany-based composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Boris Rogowski. The Society Islands were founded in 2006, shortly before the release of their debut album "Kiss & Tell" (until then Rogowski had already recorded a dozen of albums and EPs under the moniker M.D. which may or may not be released at a later point in time). The music of The Society Islands oscillates between Neo-Folk, chamber music and Indie Rock and is further characterized by stylistic shifts and ominous undertones.

The Divine Comedy

The Divine Comedy is a pop band from Northern Ireland fronted by Neil Hannon. Neil Hannon has been the only ever-present member of the band, being its founder in 1989 when he was joined by John McCullagh and Kevin Traynor. Their first album, the heavily R.E.M.-influenced and now-deleted Fanfare for the Comic Muse, enjoyed little success, though. A couple of equally unsuccessful EPs - Timewatch (1991); Europop (1992) - were to follow, with newly-recruited member John Allen handling lead vocals on some tracks. After the commercial failure of the Europop EP, this line-up soon fell apart.

Artist Type:

hunz

Hunz is a three-piece electronic pop band, spearheaded by Brisbane-based electronic musician and producer, Hans Van Vliet. With a background in music programming and motion design, Hans pulls his notes out of a binary soup of ones and zeroes, hand-crafting synth patches and beats from scratch. The result is a mix of pulsating, glitchy electronics and ethereal vocals that hint at the sinister, but succumb to the pleasure of pop hooks instead.

Brasstronaut

Like their hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia, Brasstronaut is hard to pin down. Their debut album, Mt. Chimaera, possesses qualities of the fjord-flanked city's unpredictable character. Since forming in 2007, Brasstronaut has steadily acquired the hands necessary to fuse a diverse range of genres and this follow-up to their Old World Lies EP represents the first statement by the band's definitive six-piece line-up. Vocalist and keyboardist Edo Van Breemen is joined by a roster fluent in trumpet, lap steel, flugelhorn and the seldom-heard EWI (a wind synthesizer), among others.
