Yuan Mekong uses musical production to create complex, evocative environments using fractured and glitched electronica, with a hint of pop. Allowing the deep soundscapes to evolve and show the fragility and futility of humanity.
Back in 1987, Mo & Benoelie were DJing for Ghent's youth every weekend, playing all sorts of music which was loved in those days. Back then they already reasoned that they should never shut themselves off from any style of music, that every blend, every genre, every movement was theirs for the taking. At first, they were being turned on by the strange and experimental sounds coming from the city's Boccaccio club. Over there, 12-inches were purposefully pitched down and extended, the result being a deep, metronomic, groove-laden experience, which later would be labelled as Belgian New Beat.
There are, at least, three artists known as Playgroup. 1) A pseudonym of London, UK electroclash / electro house producer & graphic designer Trevor Jackson (aka UNDERDOG). Jackson also ran, the now defunct, Output Recordings. Discography: Make It Happen! (2000), Playgroup (2001, brought diverse influences, inc: funk, disco, hip-hop, electro & dub - creating an album that relies heavily on the past, only to reshape, with such vigour, that it might sound too modern, for its own good), several more releases followed, Reproduction (2004, a remix album) & Front 2 Back (feat.
