Pauline Oliveros

Composer Pauline Oliveros is a maverick in the field of electronic music. Oliveros' first instrument was the accordion; as a teenager in Texas she played in a 100-piece accordion group that appeared at the rodeo. In 1949 she entered the University of Houston, but in 1952 transferred to San Francisco State College. Oliveros studied music privately with Robert Erickson and began to associate with a loose confederation of like-minded composers; Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Morton Subotnick among them.

James Joyce

Thought to be one of the greatest novelists of the 20th century, James Joyce is a key figure in the modernist movement. He is an Irish writer whose stories always take place in Ireland; however, he actually left the country at 22, returning infrequently. He is best known for his landmark novel Ulysses, an extremely difficult and intricate story taking place on June 16, 1904. His other major works are the short story collection Dubliners and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Finnegans Wake.

Taylor Deupree

Technology and imperfection. The raw and the processed. Curator and curated. Solo explorer and gregarious collaborator. The life and work of Taylor Deupree are less a study in contradictions than a portrait of the multidisciplinary artist in a still-young century. Deupree is an accomplished sound artist whose recordings, rich with abstract atmospherics, have appeared on numerous record labels, and well as in site-specific installations at such institutions as the ICC (Tokyo, Japan) and the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (Yamaguchi, Japan).
