The Klezbians

The Klezbians are a twelve-piece band based in West Cornwall. Formed in 2010, they have since been whipping up small storms of joyful mayhem at venues across Cornwall, and the country, with their own unique take on Jewish Gypsy (Klezmer) music.

Initially bought together for a university project, it quickly became apparent that there was something special about the sound they had created, and so continued to rehearse, learning more and more tunes until the time finally came when offers for shows started coming in.

Thus began two years of snowballing success, with shows at various venues in Penryn and Falmouth, as well as gigs in Truro, Plymouth, and Birmingham - all culminating into a triumphant performance at the Music for Youth Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in November 2011.

Since then, the Klezbians have continued to perform in and around Cornwall whilst also working on their respective degrees, but have also recently recorded their debut E.P. - watch this space for details!

The Klezbians are available from January 2013 for gig bookings, school workshops, and events, please contact us via our website for further information

Lou Brown

"A wonderful artist." Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

"One of my Glastonbury highlights." Johnnie Walker, BBC Radio 2

"Check out the lovely Lou Brown. She's brilliant." Chris Addison, actor & comedian

"This album is a masterpice." Acoustic Magazine

"A name to watch." Rock'n'Reel

Lou’s debut album was described by one reviewer as “an album for romantics; totally unpretentious, beautifully honest”, and it is this that has seen her become a firm favourite for many, including DJ Johnnie Walker, who recorded Lou live at Glastonbury Festival for broadcast on BBC Radio 2. 'Calm the Rising Waters' is the latest album from Lou Brown, described by Acoustic Magazine as "just perfect." With a bigger, brighter sound, and featuring the instrumental and production skills of Clive Gregson, the album continues to gain her even more fans and admirers.

Lou has previously toured the USA, along with headline tours in the UK and several major festivals. She's worked with many popular musicians, such as José González, Hazel O'Conner, Paul Young, Julie Fowlis, Karine Polwart, Megson, Diana Jones and the legendary Albert Lee.

Fearne

If energy, talent and passion could be measured in gold, Fearne would be millionaires. The Bournemouth foursome, Alex Beds (vocal and acoustic guitar), Adam Pulfer (vocals and electric guitar), Nick Bryson (vocals, bass and synths) and Darren Barret (drums) are taking indie pop/rock to a whole new level and winning an army of fans in the process. With exceptional live performances it’s no wonder they have been on the road supporting artists such as Feeder, Athlete, Nizlopi, Stornoway and Diana Vickers. 2009 saw a busy year of touring culminating in their playing to 10,000 people and gaining many new fans with several sessions for BBC Radio Solent. Now with a new 6 track self-titled EP, 2010 is set to see them reach even greater heights.

Principal songwriter of the band, Alex Beds, has the voice and the lyrics to simultaneously charm you and break your heart. But don’t be fooled by his quiet assurance and unassuming persona, this man is a born entertainer and can whip up a crowd to fever pitch within seconds of stepping out onto the stage. The rhythm section of Fearne is key to their sound. Nick Bryson’s driving bass lines inject electric energy and funky overtones to deliver an exciting, multi-layered, complex sound. With Adam Pulfer’s searing lead guitar and Darren Barret’s throbbing drum section Fearne conjure up sonorous perfection. With influences from Damien Rice to Marty McFly, the Fearne boys’ eclecticism is charming.

Fearne’s magic lies in mixing the recognised Brighton sound with the heartfelt, weighty delivery emblematic of romantic Bournemouth. Further add a measure of dry wit with a good dose of eccentricity and you have a recipe for success. If you like your indie pop/rock energetic, your band members passionate and your performances polished to perfection, then look no further.

Rue Royale

The album includes recent single “Halfway Blind” which got repeat plays on BBC 6Music by the likes of Gideon Coe and Nemone when released as a limited edition seven inch in January. The song, along with “Blame”, alludes to a struggle to see clearly – figuratively and literally for Brookln who’s legally blind in one eye. ‘Guide To An Escape’ is about self-discovery, embracing the flip-sides of life on the road (“Foreign Night”) and the tussle of uncertainty and hope as dreams are chased (“We’ll Go On Alright”).

After clocking up over 400 shows in the last three years, Rue Royale will continue to build their grass-roots following as they tour ‘Guide To An Escape’, playing many of their biggest venues yet across Europe in 2011.

It’s all about the journey, not the destination. The adventure is theirs, and yours, for the taking.

Anja McCloskey & Band

Multi-instrumentalist, Anja McCloskey, is a relative veteran of the music scene for her tender years. She has already gained a raft of experience playing with the likes of ten-piece performance orchestra, The Irrepressibles and folk-rock trailblazers, Haunted Stereo. It is with Haunted Stereo that Anja discovered that much of her creative inspiration veered towards, and suited, a folk arrangement. This included the composition of songs such as Cross the Sea, a Q Magazine Track of the Day, and to singing lead vocals on Santy Anno, which featured on the Wears the Trousers Magazine tribute compilation to Odetta in 2010.

Half-American, half-German and raised in Northern Germany, Anja’s love for music evolved as she grew up listening to her grandfather playing the button accordion. This exposure to the accordion led to it becoming her main instrument, although her wider interest in music meant that not only is she classically trained as an accordionist, but as a gospel pianist too. In 2000 Anja won the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award in the US and two years later moved to the UK to continue her musical journey.

Her eclectic background has been put to good use. Whilst it wasn’t entirely based in the folk scene, her EP – Turn, Turn, Turn - has allowed Anja to explore that side of her creativity. Using quite delicate arrangements, the EP features a multitude of instruments such as piano, violin, viola, guitar and clarinet, but the main feature strays towards her expert accordion playing and her vocals. Pulling on influences like Sharon van Etten, Abigail Washburn and Rufus Wainwright and combining her classical knowledge and her new found inspiration for folk is a tantalising prospect that you won’t have long to wait for.

Willowen

Willowen are a three piece alternative folk band from Bournemouth who play snazzy, original and unique acoustic songs with catchy choruses and deep structures. Willowen have drawn comparisons to Mumford and Sons and most recently an acoustic Razorlight. The band will end 2010 on a high, headlining Champions in Bournemouth.

'You guys had some strong songs with a great connection to the crowd.'
-The OtherHalf

'Awesome all round performance. A young group of lads with huge potential.'
Alex Marle (The Winchester, Bournemouth)

‘Fantastic. I feel very summery now’
(It’s Own Sound)
‘Very anthemic that one, very sweet lyrics’
(The Bear & The Octopus)
-Addie Jay, Thunder FM

'Willowen sound promising, definitely part of the Bournemouth Surf Sea sound – upbeat, punchy and positive, evocative of long Summers and so on. 'The Story' instantly brings a smile to my face, simply because of the chord progressions, and the soulful chorus. Well worth trying to get to see these guys.'- Tim Heywood (Hope FM)

Gehko

The four members of Gehko, Rich Mead, Stewart Melvin, Dave Rudge and Rich Kelly, sat at the beach hut they had often sat. It was the essence of what they saw that day which captivated and inspired their musical motivation; happy day’s, lazying in the sun, watching the beautiful nature of the sea and people alike, eclipsing the dark days of the autumn and winter months. With similar aspirations and musical taste they strove to deliver music which epitomized this feeling; creating waves of feel good music to the masses.. Ladies, gents and fellow geckos.. Tis the year of the gehko!!
